If you just want to solve pesky problems and get back to work, go with a 30-day trial and try it out for yourself. Sure, if you prefer to "roll your own" solution with Unix command-line utilities and open-source freebie apps, by all means go that route. Every user I've worked with who complained about the malware from freebie "cleaner" apps was using another app with a similar sounding name (won't list them here, they don't deserve the search engine juice). I have used Clean My Mac X for more than eight years without a single problem or misbehavior. MacPaw and Clean My Mac X have never used these.
Other tools with similar names are far less ethical and in the past have polluted a user's Mac with pop-ups and hidden scanners. Every major MacOS review site (MacWorld, iMore,, The Tech Reviewer, others) gives Clean My Mac X top rating for effectiveness of its component tools, the ease of use for new users, and for the ethical behavior of the MacPaw company.
